CCI's Policy Role

The subject matter of our policy work arises from a number of sources including current member concerns, statutory reviews of legislation, invitations to submit views to ministers, government departments and parliamentary committees, and initiatives suggested by our Board, councils and committees.

This policy work incorporates detailed written submissions, direct presentation and independent research commissioned by CCI on specific business issues such as worker’s compensation, retail trading hours, industrial relations reforms, taxation reform, and electricity market deregulation.

We do not differentiate our efforts in the policy arena between large and small businesses, nor do we promote the views or preferences of a business minority. Rather, we represent the majority view across a broad spectrum. In all of that, we take great pride in the fact that the majority of our members are small and medium enterprises.

The Board is the Chamber's primary policy endorsement body, assisted by the input of CCI's various policy councils and committees, which in turn comprise representatives from our member organisations.

This direct input gives our policies contemporary relevance and high level of credibility which is important as we present these positions to government, Parliament, the media and the broader public.

CCI does not favour any particular political party. Our non-partisan stance means our focus remains firmly on the needs of our members and that our policy agenda is build on the enduring principles of a free and enterprising society.

In short, CCI exists to serve its members by:

  • providing quality cost-effective support and services to help members build their business
  • lobbying government to promote an economic and legislative environment that encourages the development of responsible private enterprise
